Harmony Week is a national celebration that recognises Australia’s cultural diversity and the many backgrounds, cultures and experiences that contribute to our communities and workplaces.
Observed each year in March, Harmony Week highlights the importance of respect, inclusiveness and a sense of belonging for everyone. It provides an opportunity for individuals, organisations and communities to acknowledge the positive role diversity plays in everyday life.
The Meaning of Harmony Week
Australia is one of the most culturally diverse countries in the world, with people from many different cultures, languages and traditions living and working together.
Harmony Week encourages people to celebrate this diversity and recognise the value that different perspectives bring to workplaces and communities. The message behind the week is simple: everyone belongs.
The colour orange is the symbol of Harmony Week and represents social communication, respect and positive connections between people. Many people show their support by wearing orange or participating in Harmony Week activities.
International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination
During Harmony Week, 21 March also marks the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. This day encourages reflection on the importance of fairness, respect and equal treatment for everyone.
